How To Remove Wood Chipper Blades

Wood chippers have sharp blades that reduce wood and other such materials to mulch quickly. The performance of the chipper depends largely on the sharpness of its blades. While you can remove the blades and sharpen them regularly, you will eventually need to replace them. All wood chippers come with a detailed manual that can help you understand how to remove the blades safely and without causing any damage to the chipper. Here’s a quick guide that can help:

1. What You Will Need
You can’t remove the blades with your bare hand. Some tools can aid you in the process and ensure you don’t get hurt. Here’s a list of tools needed:

  • Allen wrench set
  • Socket set
  • Heavy work gloves to avoid injuries
  • Rubber mallet
  • Spark plug wrench
  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Torque wrench

Make sure you have all of these materials on hand before removing the blade. These tools will also come in handy to install new blades in the chipper.

2. Disconnect the Chipper
The first step is to ensure you can safely work on the chipper. Disconnect the machine and remove the spark plug from the engine to ensure no lingering charge might cause the blades to spin. You can use the spark plug wrench to remove this part safely. Put the gloves on before working on the machine for additional safety.

3. Blade Removal Process
Once the machine is fully disconnected and safe to handle, you can start with the blade removal process. Here’s a look at what you need to do:

Use the socket wrench to remove the inspection plate. The inspection plate provides easy access to remove debris and free jams. It needs to be out of the way to remove the blades.
The blades are attached to the drum or disk with the help of some Allen bolts. Turn those bolts counterclockwise to loosen the blades. They will be visible after you remove the inspection plate.
